Project description:

The project "Implementation of Mission-Based Science and Innovation Programmes" is executed in three mission themes under the smart specialisation priorities:

- "Secure and Inclusive e-Society" - implemented by the Kaunas University of Technology Consortium;

- "Smart and Climate-Neutral Lithuania" - implemented by the Vilnius Gediminas Technical University Consortium;

- "Innovations for Health" - implemented by the Vilnius University Consortium.

The missions‘ three primary themes promote business-scientific projects aiming at enhancing their joint development and commercialization. Facilitating such a cooperation entails a number of facets, inclusive of:  establishment of start-ups/ spin-offs – additionally to addressing the lack of incubators, prototyping spaces, and pilot production lines; conduct basic and/or early-stage research; and fill the existing gaps in service and infrastructure for reinforcing R&D activities at higher levels of technological readiness.

Project activities will be implemented by April 2026. During this period, 3 Centres of Excellence will be set up (one per theme), 23 R&D projects will be implemented, 41 prototypes and 32 unique products will be developed, 19 international patent applications will be filed, 55 scientific publications will be published and 21 start-ups/spinoffs will be established.

The "Innovations for Health" theme,   With regards to Vilnius University Consortium‘s theme, “Innovations for Health“, a Gene Technology competence center will be established. The centre will bring in clusters of state-of-the-art scientific equipment (next-generation sequencing & bioinformatics, cytometry & cell sorting, microscopy and imaging, cell cultures, microbiology, bioengineering, & mass spectrometry) along with the multidisciplinary expertise of researchers. This will ensure the effective implementation of new biomedical programs and the improvement of existing treatment strategies, with a special focus on age-related diseases and cancers. Along with an advanced and a business- oriented management infrastructure, the Consortium aims to have a positive impact on national R&D progress, healthcare, and the economy.

The Consortium's 7 mission-driven R&D projects aim to utilize and strengthen the multidisciplinary expertise of scientists, develop and market the most relevant R&D products with newly generated scientific knowledge of the following areas:

  1. U-LAVS - Ultra-fast laser-induced in vitro DNA fragment synthesis.
  2. ONCOINTEGRA - Development of a clinical multi-omics platform for oncology diagnostics and advanced therapeutics.
  3. GET-TOOLS - Enhancing genome editing through the development of TnpB and miniature RNA-guided tools.
  4. HEMATO - Creating a collection of universal immunocompatible cells for cell therapies
  5. IMMUNO - Innovative cellular immunotherapy tools for the treatment of cancerous tumours.
  6. SECURE - Safer and smaller gene editing tools for in vivo treatment of genetic eye diseases.
  7. SINGLET - Single cell multi-omics and microfluidics for biomedical applications.

Project objectives:

"Secure and Inclusive e-Society" - to increase cyber resilience and reduce the risks of privacy breaches and personal data leakage. Thus contributing to the improvement of Lithuania's cybersecurity situation while ensuring a safer and more inclusive digital society.

"Smart and Climate Neutral Lithuania - to improve the environmental quality and reduce air pollution by contributing to the reduction of Lithuania's greenhouse gas emissions and promoting the use of sustainable solutions in the construction sector, and accelerating the transformation of the construction market toward sustainability and zero waste.

"Innovations for Health – to set up a competence centre for gene technology.

Project activities:

- Investments in competence centers - Establishment of 3 competence centers (construction and acquisition of R&D equipment);

- Joint Mission Programmes - implementation of 23 R&D projects;

- Innovation support and advisory services.
